Introductory Scuba
no experiences needed
If you just want to try scuba diving, you can participate in the Scuba Barry introductory dive. It’s a quick and easy way to find out if you like scuba diving. Have you always wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater? If you want to try scuba diving, but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge into a certification course, the Scuba Barry introductory dive is for you. You learn the basic safety guidelines and skills needed to dive under my direct supervision.
Get ready to:
- Go over the scuba gear you use to dive and how easy it is to move around underwater with your gear.
- Find out what it’s like to breathe underwater.
- Learn key skills that you’ll use during every scuba dive.
- Have fun swimming around and exploring.
- Hear about becoming a certified diver.
We will spend up to 6 hours together including a classroom portion, training session, underwater skills, and 2 shore dives in the beautiful waters of Maui!
First, a classroom portion and then a skills session. In the classroom portion, we will complete paperwork including a scuba medical statement and liability waiver. We will also practice the two required skills: partially flooded mask and regulator recovery. Learning these two skills is essential so that you can remove water from your mask during the dive and in the unlikely event that you spit out your regulator you will know how to locate it and how to purge the mouthpiece of water after placing it back into your mouth.
Next, I will custom fit you with all the gear you will need, review the scuba equipment, and safety procedures such as continuously breathing, staying together, etc.
In the ocean underwater, I will demonstrate the partially flooded mask skill and the regulator recovery skill and then you will perform the two skills. Once that is completed I will guide you on an exploration of the underwater world.
The Scuba Barry Introductory dive is a quick and easy introduction to what it takes to safely explore the underwater world. To sign up for a Scuba Barry Introductory dive, you must be at least ten years old. No prior experience with scuba diving is necessary, but you need to be in reasonable physical health, not prone to anxiety attacks, and be able to swim in the ocean. All you need to bring is your bathing suit and a positive attitude. Are you ready to try it out?
Guided dives /scooter dives
GUIDED DIVES – Together we will create a personalized two tank diving experience that will likely be the highlight of your Maui vacation!
There are many great dive sites on Maui, I will find the right one for you!
These dives can also be a combination of certified and introductory divers if that is the makeup of your group. If there is a non-certified diver in your group, the group size will be limited to four divers unless arrangements are made for another instructor to join us. Also, the dive will have a maximum depth of forty feet unless all divers are certified.
If you are certified but it has been a while since your last dive I am happy to provide a tailor-made refresher dive for you. Certified divers may also select a night dive as their second dive at no additional cost.
Night dives
The experience and calmness of night diving cannot be compared with any other form of scuba diving. It is completely different. Dive slowly at night and you will find it exciting and relaxing at the same time. Many of the reef animals sleep during the day and only come out at night. The thought of dipping below the surface at night seems mysterious, yet so alluring. Although you’ve been scuba diving at a site many times before, at night you drop into a whole new world and watch it come to life under the glow of your dive light. I will provide a flashlight for each diver. The scene changes as day creatures retire and nocturnal organisms emerge. If you’ve wondered what happens underwater after the sun goes down, sign up for a night dive with Scuba Barry. Scuba certification is required to participate in a night dive.
PADI Open Water certification
Learning to dive is one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Earning your PADI certification will forever change the way you see the world, both above and below the surface. A PADI Open Water certification is the world’s most popular and widely recognized scuba course with 28 million PADI-certified divers worldwide.
Interested in learning to scuba dive? You’ve come to the right place. Scuba lessons unlock the door to new adventures and amazing animal encounters. By the end of your scuba certification course, you’ll see our ocean planet through new eyes. A scuba diving certification, also known as an Open Water Diver certification, allows you to dive anywhere in the world. Similar to driving a car, scuba diving requires specific knowledge, skills, and training. A PADI Open Water Diver certification allows you to seek adventure anywhere where there’s water.
During our time together we will complete four open water dives and a confined water training session. Certification means you know how to properly use hand signals, read your pressure and depth gauge, how each piece of equipment works, and what to do when faced with a challenging situation. Prior to these training dives, you will complete the PADI online E-learning. There is an additional fee for the E-learning.
With a group size of one or two students, we can typically complete the four open water dives and a confined water training session within two long days. With a group size of more than two students, three days is typically required.
PADI Advanced Open Water certification
The Advanced Open Water certification is made up of five adventure dives, the course builds on the diving fundamentals of the PADI Open Water course. It adds a degree of task loading and forces you to begin “thinking like a diver.” Two of the five adventure dives are mandatory, Deep and Underwater Navigation. Planning and safely executing deeper dives, combined with the ability to navigate a dive site. You will also choose three more dives:
- Digital Underwater Imaging
- Drift
- Fish ID
- Night
- Peak Performance Buoyancy
- Enriched Air Nitrox
- Scooter (extra fee applies)
Prior to these training dives, you will complete the PADI online E-learning. There is an additional fee for the E-learning.
With a group size of one or two divers, we can typically complete the five adventure dives within two days. With a group size of more than two students, three days is typically required.
boat dives
A chartered boat dive from Maui is amazing but not inexpensive starting at $2800. A more affordable option is to join a group dive boat while still having me as your private guide, starting at $1400. Some scuba boats can accommodate as many as 18 divers. I would be one of your personal underwater scuba guides and underwater photographer. All the scuba gear is included. We would do a two-tank dive, including a dive at Molokini weather permitting. If there are snorkelers in your group they are welcome to come along, there would also be a snorkel guide in the water with them. Boat departure times are early because the wind often picks up by 10 am.
